Our Story

The Star S Ranch is the compilation of five contiguous ranches. The ranches where combined to make a hunting ranch unlike any other in the region. The ranch has five miles of the beautiful James River running through it. On the west end of the ranch is Monument Mountain which is the highest point in Mason County at 2200ft elevation. The ranch has 28 miles of perimeter. It is more than a 10 mile drive from the east end of the ranch to the west end by the shortest route. The Star S Ranch has over 50 Miles of interior roads 14 miles of creek bottoms with massive cliff faces throughout. The game on the ranch, use these creek bottoms to move through and find shelter.

There are several types of terrain on the ranch. There is river country which consists of a rich heavy post oak and boulder strewn flood plain. From the river the land rises rocky through spring fed creek bottoms and cliff rock draws. Traveling west the land turns to a soft red sandy soil with mesquite and old growth hardwoods including maples, scattered walnut, hickory and numerous oak species. This red soil turns to a sandy loam pasture with oak and walnuts.   On the western end of the ranch there are two thousand acres of the Blue Mountains.   With primarily walnut and some oak species this rugged limestone country has heavy black soil.   The Monument Mountain valley’s grow shin oak and hickory, as well as walnuts.   These four distinct types of terrain over the 10 mile east-west lay of the ranch make for a varied habitat to support the many species that live on the Star S Ranch. This allows the many species on the ranch to live in the terrain that is most similar to their home range.

This land makes for excellent whitetail habitat. The terrain here makes for challenging hunting in a beautiful Texas Hill Country setting. Amazing genetics coupled with a supplemental protein and mineral feeding program allow us to harvest world class deer in the Texas Hill Country of Mason County.

The Ranch is also ideally suited for the African species that live here. The grasses are rich and while there is usually not enough rain to regularly grow crops without irrigation, there is more rain than most of the areas of Africa where many of our species naturally occur. We supplement our protein feeding program with irrigated food plots of biologic and tecomate.
