Sable Bull Hunts
Sable Antelope are among Africa’s most prized trophies, also known as the royal antelope.
Our population of Sable number over 120 animals making it the largest herd outside of Africa. We estimate roughly 50 bulls inhabiting 8,000 acres. That number is growing as we release approximately 15-20 each year from our breeding areas. As a grazer, sable are primarily grass eaters though you will usually see them skirting the edge of the brush. Bulls will weigh 750 pounds and have very few enemies. Even lions view them as a food source of last resort. Bad tempered and extremely territorial, older bulls seldom move from their selected territories. You will see younger bachelor groups of as many as 15 feeding together though. Their range spans across the Southern parts of Africa. Angola was once home to great numbers of the giant sable or Hippotragus Variani, which had horns that were commonly over 50”. But in the rest of Africa, you would never pass up a bull over 40”. As you can see from the photos, we commonly harvest 40” + bulls.
Our hunting styles vary as to method of take and time of year. Most of our guides are not only experienced hunting locally but have international hunting experience as well. We primarily hunt safari style, glassing hill sides and valleys. When they are deep in the brush, we will stalk ridges and glass.
For bow hunters, it is usually a matter of sitting in our world class blinds and patience. We limit our hunting, only taking a few mature bulls per year. We are not going to hunt a bull until he has reached his maximum size. Because of our management and breeding success, Star S Ranch has record class trophy hunting.
You will be staying in our 7,000-foot Waterfall Lodge which was completed in the summer of 2014. The main lodge includes 32-foot ceilings with black walnut walls covered with trophies from around the world. A granite bar top and service area is perfect for relaxing and telling hunting stories. The back porch overlooks a water hole where it is not uncommon to see Sable Antelope, Kudu, Axis Deer, and Whitetail Deer drinking water. There are 4 casitas, each with two rooms which has three queen sized beds and an on-suite bathroom. One room, the lodge and surroundings are wheel chair accessible so all can enjoy the facilities and outdoors. Additionally, you can fly your plane into our 5,000-foot paved Star S Airport which is located in the middle of the ranch.
