Texas African Game Hunts

Gemsbok Hunts

Gemsbok are the largest and probably the prettiest of the five oryx species. Gemsbok have a beautiful black and white mask on their face with black and white legs. They also have a long black tail that native Africans often use as fly swatters.

They inhabit the Kalahari Desert of Namibia and South Africa and therefore are extremely drought hardy, their long black horns serve as natural radiators during long hot summer days and they can go without water for days, getting all the fluids they need out of their diet. Our population of Gemsbok number over a 100 ranging freely over 4,000 acres. As a grazer, gemsbok are primarily grass eaters and generally prefer open pasture where they depend on the security of herds ranging from 10-20 females and calves. Both cows and bulls have horns with cows typically having longer horns and the bull’s horn typically being heavier. Bulls will weigh 500 pounds and with their horns reaching as long as 40”, are perfectly capable of defending themselves. Prolific breeders and fast growers, cows will calf about every 9-10 months and calves mature quickly. Our trophies usually exceed the mid to upper 30-inch range. Known not only for their long horns and beautiful cape, Gemsbok meat is as good as it gets.

Our hunting styles vary as to method of take and time of year. Most of our guides are not only experienced hunting locally but have international hunting experience as well. We primarily hunt safari style, glassing hill sides and valleys. When they are deep in the brush, we will stalk ridges and glass. For bow hunters, it is usually a matter of sitting in our world class blinds and patience. We limit our hunting, only taking a few mature bulls per year. We are not going to hunt a bull until he has reached his maximum size. Because of our management and breeding success, Star S Ranch has record class trophy hunting.

You will be staying in our 7,000-foot Waterfall Lodge which was completed in the summer of 2014. The main lodge includes 32-foot ceilings with black walnut walls covered with trophies from around the world. A granite bar top and service area is perfect for relaxing and telling hunting stories. The back porch overlooks a water hole where it is not uncommon to see Sable Antelope, Kudu, Axis Deer, and Whitetail Deer drinking water. There are 4 casitas, each with two rooms which has three queen sized beds and an on-suite bathroom. One room, the lodge and surroundings are wheel chair accessible so all can enjoy the facilities and outdoors. Additionally, you can fly your plane into our 5,000-foot paved Star S Airport which is located in the middle of the ranch.
